Widow’s Island – The Legend Hidden in Ba Be Lake

🌿 Introduction to Widow’s Island

Widow’s Island (locally known as Đảo Bà Góa or Pò Giả Mải) is a small, mysterious islet in the heart of Ba Be Lake, located in Bac Kan province, northern Vietnam. Despite its modest size, it holds a legendary tale of kindness, gratitude, and a miraculous survival that has shaped local folklore for centuries.

📖 The Legend Behind Widow’s Island

According to the Tay ethnic people, two different versions of a single legend explain the island’s origin — both centered around a poor widow and her compassion.
During a village festival, a poor old woman arrives, ignored and rejected by everyone — except a widow and her young son who offer her food and shelter. Grateful, the old woman gives them two rice husks and a bag of ashes, warning them to scatter it around their house. Soon, a flood covers the entire valley, forming Ba Be Lake. Miraculously, the rice husks turn into a boat, saving them. Their ash-protected house becomes what we now know as Widow’s Island.
