One day, an elderly beggar woman, covered in sores and dressed in tattered clothing, wandered into the village seeking shelter and food. The villagers shunned her, disgusted by her appearance and smell. Only the widow and her son showed compassion, offering her food and a place to rest.
Grateful for their kindness, the beggar woman revealed her true identity as a supernatural being and warned them of an impending disaster. She advised the widow to scatter rice husks around her house for protection. That night, a torrential storm raged, and the ground sank beneath the village, creating the vast Ba Bể Lake. Only the widow’s house, safeguarded by the rice husks, remained untouched.
Amid the floodwaters, the widow and her son used two halves of a rice husk to create dugout canoes, which they used to rescue the drowning villagers. Their selfless actions earned them eternal reverence, and the site of their house eventually became the island we now call Widow Island.
