With its emerald waters, steep limestone mountains, and lush forests, Ba Be Lake is one of the most magnificent natural sights in Vietnam. As someone who has made multiple trips to Ba Be over the past 5 years, I highly recommend adding this area to your Vietnam itinerary.
About Ba Be Lake
Nestled in the mountains of Northern Vietnam’s Bac Kan Province, Ba Be Lake is the largest freshwater lake in the country. Surrounded by steep peaks reaching up to 1554 meters (5,115 ft), the scenery is breathtaking.
Ba Be Lake is actually three linked lakes – Pe Lam, Pe Lu, and Pe Leng – but is commonly referred to as just Ba Be Lake. The average depth is around 30 meters (98 ft). The lake waters appear turquoise green due to the limestone bedrock.
Highlights of Visiting Ba Be Lake
Here are some of the top attractions and activities around Ba Be Lake that make it a must-visit destination:
- Boat Tours – Cruising on Ba Be Lake by wooden boat is one of the best ways to take in the scenery. Float through caves and see islands, villages, and waterfalls.
- Kayaking – Paddle through clear waters with limestone cliffs towering above. Kayak through jungle tunnels and to hidden lagoons.
- Hiking – Trek through the forests and rice paddies to minority villages. Reach waterfalls and valley overlooks.
- Swimming – Take a dip in the cool, emerald green lake waters. There are nice beaches and pools to swim in.
- An Ma Temple – This scenic temple built in the 18th century on the shores of the lake is worth a visit.
- Dau Dang Waterfall – A powerful waterfall cascading down near the lake.
When to Visit Ba Be Lake
The best time to visit Ba Be Lake is during the dry season between October and April. September and May are also good months with occasional showers.
I’d avoid the wet summer months of June-August when heavy rain and humidity are common. December-February can be quite cold in the mountains around the lake.
Ba Be Lake offers stunning natural scenery unlike anywhere else in Vietnam. I highly recommend adding this off-the-beaten-path destination to your itinerary. Let me know if you need any other tips to plan your visit to magical Ba Be Lake!
